"Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art!"
— Andy Warhol

This requires us to take Andy Warhol's celebration of commerce and pivot it from a statement about capitalist efficiency to a mandate for existential creativity.

If we accept Warhol's premise that business is an art form, we must acknowledge that for the last century, we have been painting on a canvas that is burning. In Warhol's time, "being good in business" meant profit maximization, scaling, and efficiency. The "art" was the ability to generate capital. However, art evolves.

Just as realism gave way to abstract expressionism, the "art of business" is undergoing a violent paradigm shift. And it has to.

In a world threatened by regressive behaviour, rampant consumption and self-interest, I've chosen a different path — as a person, a father, an entrepreneur. Not to know better, but to do better. WE ARE CREW is the invitation to do exactly that, together.

The daily ignorance towards scientific findings and the suffering of those fleeing the consequences of our lifestyle fuel my drive to remain active.

It is time for everyone to understand that we are not passengers, but members of the crew on our mother ship earth.

Mastering the Art of Impact

We don't view business as a mere pursuit of profit, but as the ultimate form of creative responsibility. WE ARE CREW is more than a consultancy; it is a high-performance ecosystem. We bridge the gaps between Corporates, Service Providers, Associations, Politics and Scientists to achieve one singular goal: a regenerative economy as a legacy for the next generation.

07. Juli 2026 · Klartext · Sustainable Finance Sustainable Finance wird erwachsen – und stellt die Machtfrage neu Sustainable Finance Is Growing Up – And Redefining the Power Question

Was das operativ bedeutet

Was daraus folgt

The ESG hype is over. What's replacing it is less spectacular but far more consequential: sustainable finance is moving into the engine room of classic corporate finance — as a hard-nosed risk filter and a strategic capital-allocation lever. Anyone raising or allocating capital today no longer needs a green narrative. They need a credible transformation pathway.

The market has quietly left the party. No outcry, no fanfare — more a sober comedown. The vague ESG labels of recent years have lost their pull because they explained too little and delivered even less. What's taking their place is something more valid: a sustainable finance landscape that looks increasingly like the standards of classic corporate finance. And that's exactly where its strength lies.

Four shifts define this phase of maturity.

1. From Divestment to Transition. For years the logic was simple: brown industries out, green industries in. Exclusion lists, portfolio reshuffling, done. That's no longer enough — and frankly, it never really worked. Anyone who wants to transform the real economy has to finance the transformation, not just its outcome. The focus is shifting massively to transition finance: capital for credible decarbonisation pathways in sectors that were previously grey or brown, backed by SBTi benchmarks and earmarked use of proceeds. Classic green bonds keep growing, while vague sustainability-linked bonds are losing appeal over greenwashing concerns. What counts is the plan, not the label.

2. From Avoidance to Resilience. For a long time, sustainable finance was synonymous with mitigation — that is, avoiding CO₂. Adaptation, adjusting to a climate that has already changed, played a minor role. That's finally tipping. Extreme weather, crop failures, disrupted supply chains and infrastructure damage have long been hard line items in credit risk models. Capital increasingly flows into infrastructure that can withstand weather extremes — and into the ecosystems that underpin it. "Blue bonds" for water protection, marine biodiversity and coastal defence are establishing themselves as a distinct asset class. Biodiversity is no longer a CSR topic; it's a risk factor.

3. From Idea to Sovereignty. In Europe, sustainability and economic autonomy are merging into a single investment narrative. "Sovereignty" has moved from political buzzword to allocation criterion — and applies especially to sectors where European value chains need to become resilient and independent: decarbonised energy and heating networks, resource efficiency, the circular economy. That's not a contradiction of the global sustainability agenda — it's its European translation: anyone who wants to be crisis-proof has to be regionally anchored. Anyone who wants to run a regenerative economy has to be able to close loops without depending on fragile supply chains on the other side of the world.

4. From ESG Rating to Data Integrity. CSRD, ESRS and the emerging European Green Bond Label (EuGB) are forcing the financial sector into a technological upgrade. AI is becoming the standard tool for automatically validating sustainability data, tracking ESG targets at portfolio level and algorithmically flagging greenwashing risk. The sheer mass of "light green" standard funds is shrinking — the credibility of what's left is rising. For institutional investors that means less choice but deeper transparency. For companies: no more hiding behind a purchased rating. Non-financial information (NFI) is now held to the same scrutiny as balance sheet figures. That fundamentally changes the power relationship between capital provider and capital recipient.

What this means in practice

These four trends arc cleanly toward a single point: sustainable finance is losing its naïve shine and moving into the hard core of corporate finance architecture. Anyone raising or allocating capital has to present valid, measurable transformation pathways. Anyone who can't gets worse terms — or none at all. What's striking is how few market participants have translated these requirements into a viable investment vehicle so far. Most offerings address only one of the four trends — usually data integrity, because it sits closest to existing business. A model that serves all four at once is rare.

An example from our ecosystem: United Sustainability

One approach we consider remarkably complete within the WE ARE CREW ecosystem is United Sustainability's work financing Common Livelihoods — shared foundations of life. The trend-mapping is strikingly clean:

  • Transition finance in this approach isn't played out abstractly through fund products, but through direct real-asset investments in bio-ecological and infrastructural livelihoods — agroforestry, organic farming, regenerative energy systems. Capital flows exactly where the transformation physically happens.
  • Adaptation translates into targeted investments in ecosystem restoration, soil health, water management and coastal protection. The focus shifts from pure CO₂ avoidance to actively restoring biocapacity — building resilience rather than just cutting emissions.
  • Sovereignty shows up as a consistent focus on basic infrastructure and circular technologies: circular economy, recycling, decentralised energy and water supply. Combined with local stakeholder structures and democratic ownership models, this creates exactly the kind of Europe-anchored real assets institutional investors are currently looking for.
  • Data integrity is delivered not through superficial ESG ratings but through Integrated Sustainability Valuation & Accounting — a true-cost and true-value accounting that quantifies actual environmental and social impact and feeds it back into the balance sheet.

The real point of this approach isn't the sum of its parts. It's the stance behind it: sustainability is no longer offset defensively against risk compliance, but built offensively as measurable value creation. Avoiding harm turns into generating capital — ecologically, socially and economically, all at once.

What follows from this

The market has made the switch — from ESG labelling to a resilient transformation economy. For companies seeking capital, that changes the rules of the game: anyone still showing up with vague sustainability promises loses not just investors but strategic room to manoeuvre. Anyone who presents robust pathways — on a clean data basis, with clear governance, anchored in real assets — gets access to a pool of capital that is deeper and more patient than ever before.

That's exactly the interface we work at. WE ARE CREW connects ESG expertise with IT architecture and an ecosystem of SaaS providers, reporting specialists, impact leaders, green-innovation players and investment vehicles like United Sustainability. Not as a consultant with an opinion, but as a curator of a landscape that's still too opaque for most market participants.

16. Juni 2026 · Klartext · Regulatorik & Politik Omnibus I: Weniger Berichte, mehr Verantwortung Omnibus I: Fewer Reports, More Responsibility

Was passiert: Seit dem 18.

The EU has gutted CSRD and CSDDD. Anyone who thinks that's a retreat from sustainability hasn't read the text.

What's happening: Since 18 March 2026, Omnibus I has been in force — the most far-reaching course correction in European sustainability legislation to date. Directive (EU) 2026/470, published in the EU Official Journal on 26 February 2026, cuts the scope of CSRD by roughly 80 percent: reporting obligations now apply only to companies with more than 1,000 employees and over €450 million in turnover. CSDDD is hit even harder — it now applies only to groups with more than 5,000 employees and €1.5 billion in turnover. At the same time, the ESRS data points have been cut by around 61 percent. What remains untouched is double materiality as the assessment standard.

What it means: At first glance, this looks like retreat. It isn't. What changes is the number of companies formally required to document it, not the number of companies that de facto have to deliver the data. Large in-scope corporates keep asking their supply chains for exactly the data CSRD and CSDDD would once have mandated directly — the requirement just now runs through contracts instead of law. This is precisely where the voluntary VSME standard becomes the real winner of the reform via the value-chain cap: in-scope companies may only request VSME data points from their non-in-scope suppliers, making VSME the de facto minimum standard for the entire German Mittelstand. Politically, Omnibus I is also a response to US deregulation under the second Trump administration and to competitiveness complaints from European industry associations.

My point: responsibility here wasn't reduced, it was relocated — from the regulator to the market. What's no longer legally enforced is now contractually passed down. For many mid-sized companies, that's not relief, it's a shift in control from Brussels to their biggest customers.

What to do: If you sit just below the new thresholds, get VSME-ready anyway — not out of compliance zeal, but because your largest customers will demand it regardless. If you're above the thresholds, don't read the shorter ESRS data point list as an invitation to cut corners — treat it as a chance to deliver the remaining points more cleanly.

1. Pauschale Floskeln fliegen raus.

From 27 September 2026, the era of green promises on a hunch is over. EU directive 2024/825 – EmpCo for short – cracks down on greenwashing; national law has to be in place by 27 March 2026. It hits anyone selling to consumers: ads, packaging, websites, even product and brand names. Sit on your hands and you're risking fines and your reputation. Straight talk on the five points that actually matter:

1. Vague buzzwords are out. "Eco-friendly", "climate-friendly", "green" are only allowed if you can prove genuinely outstanding environmental performance and explain it in the same medium. "Eco-friendly, because …" works. "Eco-friendly" on its own doesn't.

2. "Carbon-neutral via offsetting" is dead. Claims that lean only on compensation outside your value chain are banned. Only what you actually avoid or reduce across the lifecycle counts.

3. Future pledges need a plan. "Climate-neutral by 2030" is only fine with a public, verifiable roadmap – milestones, budget and technology included. Otherwise it's misleading.

4. Labels without a system are banned. Home-made sustainability badges are out. Only certified schemes with independent, third-party checks are allowed.

5. Pictures and colours count too. Nature imagery, green palettes, seal-like logos – if they suggest "eco", they're an environmental claim and must be backed up. Greenwashing doesn't stop at the text.

And in practice? The Schwarz Group (Lidl, Kaufland) has already set up a taskforce to review all private-label packaging. Amazon Germany is scrambling to transparently label over 2.2 million products. Chambers of commerce are sounding the alarm across the board — and the consumer protection centre in NRW predicts outright chaos and a field day for litigators.

There is no EU whitelist of certified label providers. The Green Claims Directive, which was supposed to clarify key details, is stuck in trilogue. Even Germany's national accreditation body (DAkkS) initially didn't know it was meant to play the central role in certification. Ministries and authorities have been talking past each other — and businesses are left holding the bag.

My point: this isn't a PR question, it's a data question. Robust, verifiable claims emerge exactly where sustainability meets a clean digital data foundation – the interface I work at.

01. Juni 2026 · ESG & Twin Transformation Between change and impact – why 2026 will be our year of acceleration Zwischen Wandel und Wirkung – warum 2026 unser Jahr der Beschleunigung wird

Right then, let's have a look at where we’re at. In 2026, the whole sustainability game has shifted. It’s no longer about just looking good on paper; it’s about rolling up your sleeves and getting the work done. Here’s the lowdown on the central ESG trends for 2026, served up with a bit of a straight talk flavour.

1. From "Ticks in Boxes" to the Business Case (The Execution Gap)

2026 is officially the end of the road for "fluff" and empty promises. If you’re a firm today, you aren't just judged on your grand ambitions—you’re judged on how fast you’re actually moving.

  • Performance Over Pledges: Investors and banks in the City aren't just taking your word for it anymore. They want hard, cold data on your decarbonisation path before they even think about signing off on a loan.
  • Resilience is the New Risk Management: Sustainability is now seen as proper risk management. Smart firms are proactively looking at climate risks—like water shortages or dodgy weather—at every one of their sites to stay ahead of the curve.

Smarte Firmen analysieren proaktiv Klimarisiken an all ihren Standorten.

2. AI Doing the Heavy Lifting for ESG Reporting

Let’s be honest, the mountain of data required by the CSRD is a right headache. Doing it manually? Forget about it.

  • Automation is King: By now, AI tools have taken over the graft of tracking Scope 3 emissions and digging through supplier data.
  • Audit-Ready, Real-Time: We’ve moved away from those dusty, static PDF reports. The trend now is "Live ESG Dashboards"—proper digital setups that provide data that’s ready for the auditors whenever they fancy a look.

3. Regulation: Cutting the Red Tape

The EU has finally seen sense in 2025/2026 and brought in some "Omnibus" tweaks to stop the mid-sized firms from drowning in paperwork.

  • Sharp Focus on Materiality: Instead of reporting on hundreds of data points just for the sake of it, companies are focusing on what actually matters—the stuff that really impacts the planet or the bottom line.
  • Joining the Dots: We’re seeing a proper alignment between the European ESRS standards and the global ISSB standards. It’s making life a lot easier for the firms operating all over the shop.

4. "Nature Positive" & The Biodiversity Shift

For ages, everyone was obsessed with just CO2. But in 2026, nature has taken centre stage. You can’t ignore the birds and the bees anymore.

  • Biodiversity Reporting: Companies now have to be transparent about how they’re using natural resources—like water quality and soil health.
  • The Circular Economy: Circularity has gone from a "nice-to-have" to a massive competitive edge. It’s the best way to stop being so reliant on expensive raw materials and keep costs down.

4. "Nature Positive" & Der Biodiversitäts-Wandel

5. Social & Governance: The War for Talent

The "S" in ESG—Social—is finally getting the respect it deserves, mostly because finding good people is such a struggle these days.

  • Employer Branding: In 2026, your ESG track record is a massive selling point in the "War for Talents." People want to work for a firm that actually gives a toss.
  • Supply Chain Transparency: With the law getting tougher, checking human rights standards way down the supply chain (n-Tier) isn't just a "best practice" anymore—it’s standard procedure.
